I was working a youth Conference last week and I was thinking it would be cool to do a strobe effect during the music to give it a little edge. But I was on a carbonite 1 and it isn‘t really known for it’s effects. I used to do effects like that all the time on the Synergy and Vision line of switchers. So I came up with an idea and it worked and I thought I would share what I did.
Keeping in mind that you can’t manipulate preview and program I knew the effect would have to be done on a key. I created a full frame DVE on Key 1. I routed my clean feed from my router to an input on the switcher. Making sure my clean feed was set before key 1 I routed the clean feed input into my full frame DVE.
The DVE has a freeze option if you keep hitting next towards the end of the menu. Freeze on and Freeze off… (see where I’m going with this)
I created a custom control that went something like this
Key 1 DVE Freeze on
Pause 2 frames
Key 1 DVE Freeze Off
Pause 3 frames
Loop custom control
The longer the first pause the more choppy it will look, I played around with different pauses, I liked this the best.
I then created a memory with Key 1 as a full frame DVE and my Key 4 set to my CG running lyrics (because I was only going to use this effect during music). I then built another custom control to trigger the effect.
Recall Memory # xx (whatever you saved the memory as)
Pause 3 frames
Play CC #201 (The custom control that I programed to loop the strobe effect)
I then built a 3rd custom control to stop the effect. Going something like this.
Cut Key MLE 1- Key 1 Off air
Cancel CC # 201
I could have just hit a blank CC to cancel the looping CC but every once in a while when I did that it would hold on a freeze frame, I found cutting it off air made sure I wouldn’t get a freeze frame, not to mention I would get rid of the 1 frame of Delay caused when using a DVE.
I could have done this differently, but I also built a couple of black and white effects and sepia effects to use during the show so the memory build and cancel were important. But I could have just built the looping CC and then cut the key on and off air.
Give it a try and have some fun.
